The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is set to take place from June 1 in the West Indies and the USA. This time, a total of 20 teams are taking part, with all of them divided into four groups of five each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 8 round, where the teams will again be split into two groups of four each.

The top two sides from the Super 8 round will go through to the semi-finals, which will be played on June 26 and 27. The final is scheduled to take place on June 29 at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados. Out of the 52 T20 matches, 16 will be played in the USA. These matches will all be from the group stages, including the marquee India vs Pakistan clash on June 9 in New York.

A few group stage games and all of the Super 8, semi-finals and final matches will be hosted in the West Indies. England are the defending champions, having won the tournament in 2022 in Australia.

Who will win the T20 World Cup 2024?

For the first time in history, 20 teams will be taking part in the T20 World Cup. The top eight teams from the 2022 edition and the two hosts – West Indies and the USA – qualified directly for the tournament. The remaining two automatic qualifications happened via the ICC Men’s T20I team rankings. The two best-ranked teams among the non-qualified teams as of November 14, 2022 filled two more slots.

The remaining eight places were filled via several qualifiers. Two teams each from Africa, Asia and Europe and one each from the Americas and the East Asia Pacific groups made it to the T20 World Cup. Teams such as Papua New Guinea and Uganda are featuring in the tournament for the first time.

Due to the format, the ICC Cricket World Cup prediction has become extremely tough this time around. As far as the contenders to lift the trophy are concerned, England seem to be the favorites yet again. They won the previous edition of the tournament that was held in Australia under Jos Buttler’s leadership, beating Pakistan in the final.

Not much has changed in terms of personnel for them, and players such as Buttler, Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Harry Brook and Will Jacks are in great form, with most of them coming to the tournament after featuring in the Indian Premier League. Jofra Archer making a comeback is a big boost for them, while Adil Rashid, Mark Wood and Reece Topley are all specialists in the white-ball formats.

India are certainly not the tournament favorites given their style of play in the T20 format. However, their ICC Cricket World Cup prediction becomes tricky as the team led by Rohit Sharma possess quality players, and if they manage to click in unison, then it will be very tough to get past them. As far as the key players are concerned, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal have all been in great form in the IPL and will be looking to continue in the same vein. They have not played much T20 International cricket though, and this could be the only downside for the Indian team. However, with the T20 World Cup following soon after the IPL, it is a significant issue for most of the major teams participating in the tournament.

Who will win their group at the 2024 T20 World Cup?

As mentioned above, the 20 teams have been divided into four groups of five each. The groups are listed below:

  • Group A – Ireland, Canada, USA, India, Pakistan
  • Group B – Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman, England
  • Group C – West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand
  • Group D – Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka

In terms of the T20 World Cup prediction, when it comes to group A, India and Pakistan are expected to qualify for the Super 8 round. The clash between the arch-rivals is scheduled to take place on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. India and Pakistan produced a last-ball thriller at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the T20 World Cup 2022. Therefore, today’s World Cup prediction of the winner between them is not an easy one to make. Another special mention here is of co-hosts USA, who are taking part in the mega event for the first time. They will be playing big teams such as India and Pakistan and will be keen to impress everyone with their performances.

In Group B, Australia and England seem certainties as it looks unlikely that Namibia, Scotland and Oman will challenge them. Again, Australia and England are Ashes rivals and the match between these two teams will be the one to watch out for. Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados will host this marquee encounter on Saturday, June 8.

Group C is a very competitive group and includes one of the hosts and two-time T20 World Cup champions, West Indies. Uganda and Papua New Guinea are the newcomers in this group, while the other two teams are New Zealand and Afghanistan. Afghanistan are no longer minnows, especially in the shortest format, as they have enough talent in their squad to upstage any team. In fact, it shouldn’t be a surprise if they make it to the Super 8 round. New Zealand always punch above their weight and it is vital for the home team to not let their guard down at any moment in the group stage. West Indies vs Afghanistan is the most exciting fixture from this group as the T20 World Cup prediction of this clash is uncertain, with the latter team winning on multiple occasions against the Caribbean side. For now, though, West Indies and New Zealand are the likeliest candidates from this group to make it to the next round.

Like Group C, Group D is interesting enough to keep the fans hooked. The only team that might not be in contention in this group are Nepal, as they are playing in the T20 World Cup for the first time. However, the ICC Cricket World Cup prediction for this group is the toughest to make. South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Netherlands are very competitive teams and anything can happen in a T20 match when these teams clash. Netherlands have defeated South Africa before in ICC events. South Africa, given the firepower they possess, can be viewed as the favorites to qualify for the next round. However, the T20 World Cup prediction for second position could be a tricky one to make. Moreover, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have developed a bit of a rivalry in the last couple of years, and the match between them is certainly going to make today’s World Cup prediction difficult. The two teams will face off on June 7 at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas at 7:30 PM local time (6:00 AM IST on June 8).

T20 World Cup Country Performances

The inaugural T20 World Cup was played back in 2007, and since then, a total of eight editions of the mega event have taken place in different countries. Interestingly, only West Indies and England have lifted the trophy twice.

The most memorable T20 World Cup was the first edition, when it was an unknown entity. India, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, lifted the trophy, beating Pakistan in the final. The entire competition had a fantastic atmosphere, with Yuvraj Singh of India smashing six sixes in an over against England off Stuart Broad. The young Indian side also got the better of the experienced Australian team in their semi-final before overcoming their arch-rivals in the thrilling finale.

After bowing out in the final and semi-final of the first two editions, Pakistan produced a historic performance to lift the trophy in 2010. Defying many people’s ICC Cricket World Cup prediction, Pakistan stunned England in the title clash. However, 12 years later, England took revenge for their defeat in the final to lift the T20 World Cup trophy for the second time. They got the better of the men in green in Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, with Buttler lifting the trophy.

In 2016, hardly anyone’s T20 World Cup prediction was West Indies lifting the title in India. Yes, they had won the tournament back in 2012, but their form coming into the competition had not been that great and not many expected them to go all the way. For that reason, their 2016 triumph is considered a historic one in cricketing folklore.

Another unlikely ICC Cricket World Cup prediction was Australia lifting the T20 World Cup trophy for the first time in 2021. The tournament took place in the UAE due to the COVID-19 breakout in India, and Australia stunned many with their antics when they beat New Zealand in the final.

T20 World Cup Winners

  1. 2007India defeated Pakistan by 5 runs (South Africa)
  2. 2009Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets (England)
  3. 2010England defeated Australia by 7 wickets (West Indies)
  4. 2012West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs (Sri Lanka)
  5. 2014Sri Lanka defeated India by 6 wickets (Bangladesh)
  6. 2016West Indies defeated England by 4 wickets (India)
  7. 2021Australia defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets (Oman and UAE)
  8. 2022England defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets (Australia)

T20 World Cup Records

Over the course of its eight editions, the T20 World Cup has witnessed several records. The mega event has seen teams chasing down some massive totals, while low totals have also been defended on multiple occasions. Centuries are a rarity in the shortest format and the T20 World Cup has witnessed just 11 of them in its eight editions so far.

Highest individual score

In 2012, Brendon McCullum smashed a staggering 123 off just 58 balls at a strike rate of 212.06 against Bangladesh. Thanks to his performance, New Zealand were able to post 191 runs on the board and won the game by 59 runs.

Most runs scored

Consistency can become a problem when it comes to the T20 format, as batters often take risks in a bid to score runs at a faster pace. However, former India captain Virat Kohli has been consistent and scoring runs quickly in the T20 World Cup over the years. In fact, Kohli’s performances have changed many people’s T20 World Cup prediction in India’s favor. So far, he has scored 1,141 runs in 25 innings at an unbelievable average of 81.5 and a strike rate of 131.3, and he has as many as 14 half-centuries to his name.

Most centuries scored

Only 11 times has the 100-run mark been breached in T20 World Cup history, and only one batsman has scored multiple centuries so far. Chris Gayle of the two-time champions West Indies has scored two centuries. He scored 117 against South Africa in 2007 and then smashed 100 against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in the 2016 edition of the competition.

Biggest margin of win

Sri Lanka have held this record since 2007 and it is yet to be broken. Facing Kenya in the inaugural edition, Sri Lanka won the match by a massive margin of 172 runs. They posted a mammoth total of 260 runs in their 20 overs, and in response, Kenya were bundled out for just 88 runs. Interestingly, the closest that any team has come to this record was Afghanistan in 2021 when they beat Scotland by 130 runs defending a target of 191 runs.

Highest innings score

Sri Lanka again top the charts in this aspect and this also since 2007 for smashing 260 runs in their 20 overs against Kenya. It is still the highest-ever team total in the T20 World Cup. It is the only time that Sri Lanka have crossed the 200-run mark in the mega event, with their second-highest score being 195, which took place back in 2010 against the West Indies.

Most wickets picked

Shakib Al Hasan is one of only two players who played in the 2007 T20 World Cup who will also feature in the 2024 edition. In fact, he and Rohit Sharma will have played in all nine editions of the tournament when they take to the field in their first matches of the T20 World Cup in June. Shakib is the leading wicket-taker in the history of the tournament with 47 wickets in 35 innings at an average of 18.63 and an economy of 6.78, which is absolutely brilliant.

Most five-wicket hauls

Picking up a five-wicket haul for a bowler is more difficult than scoring a century for a batter in the shortest format of the game. Only 10 times has a bowler been able to pick up a five-wicket haul in T20 World Cup history (no bowler has picked up multiple five-wicket hauls). The players to achieve this are James Faulkner, Sam Curran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ahsan Malik, Rangana Herath, Adam Zampa, Mustafizur Rahman, Ajantha Mendis, Umar Gul and Lasith Malinga. Mendis has recorded the best figures in the tournament’s history, changing the ICC Cricket World Cup prediction completely by picking six wickets for just eight runs against Zimbabwe in the 2012 edition.

Papua New Guinea Preview

Papua New Guinea are playing their second edition of the T20 World Cup, and they have yet to win a game. PNG had their chance against Uganda, but they let it slip away. They might not have the same resources as Afghanistan, but they have some players who can put pressure on Afghanistan. All PNG will be looking for their first ever win in the T20 World Cup. The team will hope to grab the limited opportunities and make the most of the chances they get.

AFG vs PNG Weather Report

It is an evening game, and the weather on Thursday in Trinidad is expected to be a bit humid with 82 percent. The temperature will be between 26 and 28 °C, with a wind speed of around 10 km/h.

AFG vs PNG Pitch Report

There is a good amount of assistance on this pitch for the bowlers. The ball will swing and seam, but as the ball gets older, it will be easy to play your shots. It is not a high-scoring venue, as the average score here is around 150. It is a bowling-first wicket.

AFG vs PNG Toss Update

This is an evening game, and the ball will move more under light. There might be some dew in the second inning. Hence, the decision to bat second at this venue will be ideal if you win the toss.

AFG vs PNG Injury Update

Both teams have all the players fit and ready to feature in this clash on Thursday.

AFG vs PNG Head-to-Head

The upcoming game will be registered in the record books as a special game because this will be the first time that Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea will play a cricket match across any format.

AFG vs PNG Players to Watch Out for

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has scored two half-centuries in two games and is in the best of his form. He will be looking to capitalise that form here.

Rashid Khan, with his different variations, might be hard to pick for PNG as they haven’t played a spinner of his calibre.

Alei Nao will be the key for PNG. He swings the new ball, and if he can strike early, Afghanistan can be under pressure.

Chales Amini has yet to fire in this tournament. But the veteran all-rounder has been the mainstay of this team and can prove to be a game-changer.

AFG vs PNG Top Batters

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup 2024. He has scored 156 runs at an average and strike rate of 78 and 154.45, respectively, and we back him to score yet another match-winning score.

AFG vs PNG Top Bowlers

Fazalhaq Farooqi has nine wickets in just two matches and is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. The left-arm pacer is getting a good amount of swing and is making the most of it. He can dismantle the under-pressure PNG batting unit.

Alei Nao has bowled well this season. He has swung the new ball and taken the ball into right-handers. That’s where he is lethal, as Afghanistan have a number of right-handers in the top six.

Betting Tips

There is no match between these two sides and the way they have performed so far. Afghans are far superior to PNG. That is why Stake.com also backs them to win this game. We also give an edge to Afghanistan because of their quality bowling unit, which has troubled the opponents. Adding to that, PNG have struggled in the batting, and that might be exposed once again in this game.

Bet on Afghanistan to win.

T20 World Cup 2024 - Match 30 USA vs Ireland

T20 World Cup 2024: United States vs Ireland Match Preview

Match No. 30 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be played between the United States and Ireland. This match will take place in Group A, which will be held at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill in Florida, on June 14 (Friday). Both teams are still in contention to qualify for the Super 8, but for that, this win is required. The team that loses this match will be eliminated from the competition.

United States Preview

Not many gave a chance to the United States at the start of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 because they were playing their first T20 World Cup. But the way they have performed has certainly raised the stock of USA cricket. They won the first two games, which has pushed them into the Super 8 race. They lost the game against India, which has dented their chance. However, if somehow they can beat Ireland, the USA will be in the Super 8 for sure.

United States Key Points

  • The biggest advantage for the USA is that they are playing in home conditions, and the players are familiar here.
  • The bowling unit has done well for the USA in this tournament, and they haven’t allowed the opposition to get away in any game.
  • Adding to that, the top order did well in the first few games, and the middle order showed a great fight as well, which gives them a great ballance in their batting department.

Last 5 Matches: W, L, W, W, L

Predicted XI: Steven Taylor, Monank Patel (c & wk), Andries Gous, Aaron Jones, Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Jasdeep Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Saurabh Netravalkar, Ali Khan

Ireland Preview

The Irish team didn’t have the start that they would have liked for the tournament. They have lost two consecutive matches. The match against Canada was in their bag, but then they let it slip away from their hands. Now Ireland have two games, and they need to win both matches in order to stay in contention. But they also need to make sure that they register big wins, which can also improve their NRR in this group.

Ireland Key Points

  • Ireland have better international exposure than the USA, which might come into play when the pressure is on.
  • The Irish bowling unit has more genuine wicket-taking options, and these bowlers have been doing it in international cricket for a long time now.
  • One area where Ireland will have an edge is that they have a number of proven all-rounders, while the USA don’t have many players who are consistent with the bat and the ball.

Last 5 Matches: NR, W, W, L, L

Predicted XI: Andrew Balbirnie, Paul Stirling (c), Lorcan Tucker (wk), Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Joshua Little, Craig Young

USA vs IRE Weather Report

The weather in Florida is the biggest concern for the matches that are scheduled to take place here. The rain is predicted for the next 4–5 days continuously. Even during match time, there are 65 percent chances of rain on Friday with a temperature of 28 °C and a wind speed of 13 km/h.

USA vs IRE Pitch Report

The pitch in Florida has a good bowling wicket that has good carry and bounce. Adding to that, the overcast conditions will be more helpful for the fast bowlers, and there will be swing and seam as well under the cloudy conditions. The rain will also make the outfield slow.

USA vs IRE Toss Update

The last game at this venue was washed out, and the conditions are likely to be the same in this game as well. But if we get a game, the toss will be very crucial. The team that wins the toss should bowl first to use the conditions and to know the DLS target if it rains.

USA vs IRE Injury Update

The USA captain, Monank Patel, missed the last game against India due to a niggle. But he is likely to be back in this game. There are no other injuries or fitness issues on either side.

USA vs IRE Head-to-Head

This will be the third game between these two teams in the shorter format. Previously, both teams had won one game each.

USA vs IRE Players to Watch Out for

Saurabh Netravalkar has been in great form. He dismissed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and will be looking to give his team a good start.

Aaron Jones has been the top scorer for the USA, and if he gets going, he will take his team to a strong position.

Mark Adair will be a big threat with the new ball. He is one of those bowlers who can swing the ball both ways and can deceive the batter with his length.

Paul Stirling needs to step up in this must-win game. He has struggled so far, but now is the time to do well.

USA vs IRE Top Batters

Aaron Jones has scored runs in almost all three games for the USA, and he is the second-highest scorer in this tournament. He plays spin and pace well, and for Ireland, he will be a big wicket.

Andre Balbirine is one of the most experienced Irish batters in the lineup. He is a consistent batter at the top but has done well in the last few series, and we think he can be the game-changer here.

USA vs IRE Top Bowlers

Saurabh Netravalkar is at the top of his form. The left-arm pacer will be bowling against the batting unit, which has a number of left-handers. And he has a great record against left-handed batters.

Josh Little is the fastest Irish bowler at the moment. He also swings the ball. He can use the conditions very well to create a difference in the game.

Betting Tips

Ireland have more experience, while the USA have form and home conditions. This will be an epic clash between two good sides. However, the USA have shown great form in this tournament, but Ireland have done well against the Associate Nations, which is why Stake.com also gives them an edge in this match.

Bet on Ireland to win.

T20 World Cup 2024 - Match 31 South Africa vs Nepal

T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa vs Nepal Match Preview

Match No. 31 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will see a clash between South Africa and Nepal. This is a match in Group D, which will be held at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown, St. Vincent. South Africa have already qualified from this group, and before the Super 8, they will look to try out some players. On the other hand, Nepal have one point in two games, and they need something special to challenge a strong team like South Africa.

South Africa Preview

South Africa have done a great job so far, and they were the first team to qualify for the Super 8. They registered a moral-boosting win against Bangladesh in New York, which would have given them confidence. They snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. However, South Africa need to find out the answers to some questions. Their top order hasn’t fired in any games, so now they will get good batting conditions. South Africa can also make some changes to give chances to the players who didn’t play until now.

South Africa Key Points

  • South Africa have always gone with a pace-heavy attack, which has been their strength. That’s what made the difference in this competition for them. Their bowlers have bowled up to the mark and didn’t let the opponent reach a good score.
  • The failure of the top order has put the middle order under pressure, and they have responded pretty well. That can make a big difference for the team in knockout matches.
  • South Africa have already qualified, so the result of this match won’t change anything. Hence, we might see the struggling South African top order playing more freely, which can make a big difference in the game.

Last 5 Matches: L, L, W, W, W

Predicted XI: Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock (wk), Aiden Markram (c), Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee

Nepal Preview

Nepal have been one of the fastest-growing nations in cricket. But they have certainly come to know what it takes to compete in a big tournament. Nepal still have two more games to play and will play against big teams. They have their own limitations, but they know how to perform well within them. The biggest boost for them will be the return of Sandeep Lamichhane. He will be back for West Indies leg of the tournament. That will give them a lot of confidence, and we might see Nepal competing well in this game.

Nepal Key Points

  • The worry for Nepal will be their batting unit. They have some good batters, but they will be tested against the pace bowling of South Africa.
  • Lamichhane has reached West Indies, and if he gets the game, he will be a threat for South African batters.
  • Having 4–5 genuine all-rounders is the main strength of Nepal. But they need to perform well here.

Last 5 Matches: L, L, L, L, NR

SA vs NEP Weather Report

The weather forecast suggests overcast conditions on Friday evening in Kingstown. Though there is no strong prediction of rain, there might be some passing showers. The temperature will be 28 °C, with a humidity level of 79 percent. The moderate wind speed will be around 26 km/h.

SA vs NEP Pitch Report

The pitch in Kingstown is a bit tricky. It plays mostly in favour of the bowlers, but the conditions for batting will improve as time goes by. There will be some dew in the second inning, which might make it tough for the bowlers. The average score here in T20s is 125.

SA vs NEP Toss Update

This is another tricky pitch that offers bowling-friendly conditions up front. The bowlers will get help early on. However, the batting conditions in the second inning will be better. Hence, the team that wins the toss should bat second.

SA vs NEP Injury Update

There is no injury concern in both camps, and all the players are fit to play.

SA vs NEP Head-to-Head

This will be the first time South Africa and Nepal will come up against each other in any format of the game.

SA vs NEP Players to Watch Out for

Anrich Nortje has been in red-hot form and has taken 8 wickets in three games. He can trouble Nepal’s batter with his pace.

Quinton de Kock will be eager to get some runs under his belt, as the conditions in New York were not ideal, but he will love playing in Kingston.

Rohit Kumar Paudel will be our pick, as he has been the best batter for Nepal over the years and has scored runs in tough conditions.

Direpndra Airee is one of the hardest hitters on Nepal’s team, and his ability to hit the spinners makes him a tough batter to bowl to.

SA vs NEP Top Batters

Heinrich Klaasen played an important inning against Bangladesh in the last game in tough pitch conditions. But he can single-handedly demolish the bowling unit of Nepal, as the pitch will be better to bat on.

Rohit Kumar Paudel is Nepal’s best batter. The captain showed glimpses of his ability in the last game and scored the most for his team. He is a good player of spin, which will help them tackle Sri Lankan spinners in the middle.

SA vs NEP Top Bowlers

Anrich Nortje has been South Africa’s best bowler in the T20 World Cup 2024. He has the pace, swing, and bounce and can be too hot to handle for Nepal.

Sompal Kami will be our pick, as he is Nepal’s go-to bowler in this game. He bowls several types of slower ones, which stick to the surface and make it tough for the batters.

Betting Tips

South Africa are in form, have more experience, have a good bowling attack, and their batting is one of the best in the tournament. All these factors increase South Africa’s chances of winning more than Nepal. That is why Stake.com also backs South Africa to beat Nepal in this clash on Friday.

Bet on South Africa to win.
