Akash Chopra Speaks About Suryakumar Yadav Playing Test Matches

Suryakumar Yadav has been in red-hot form when it comes to the T20 format. Several experts have suggested that Suryakumar Yadav should play test cricket too. Sometimes, format mixing can ruin the original game of a player. While there are players that have done well across the format like David Warner, the experiment can go either way. However, Akash Chopra has suggested that it might not be such a great idea.

In the last T20 match of the Ind vs SL, Suryakumar Yadav created havoc by scoring 112 runs from 51 balls. This once again has started the conversation of Suryakumar Yadav playing test matches for India. The former Indian opener thinks Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill both suffer from the same kind of fixation. Given that Suryakumar Yadav has not participated in numerous first-class matches recently, Chopra believes he must solely be regarded for limited-overs cricket.

I feel let’s not get obsessed says Akash Chopra on Suryakumar Yadav playing tests

“I feel let’s not get obsessed. It is our country’s tendency to get slightly obsessed, that if we get a player, we say he should be played in all three formats. At this point in time, I feel we are wanting to do that with Shubman Gill. We were extremely eager to do that with Rishabh Pant earlier, that he is doing well, let’s play him in all formats. The same talk is happening with Suryakumar now because there is no doubt about the level at which he is batting,” Akash Chopra said.

He further added that with the ODI World Cup in 2023 and T20 World Cup in 2024 these tournaments should be the main focus. Akash Chopra also explained that Suryakumar Yadav would find it difficult to make space for himself in the test team. This is because there are barely any available spots. Additionally, it is ideal to have separate teams for separate formats. England is one of the teams in international cricket that makes sure they maintain 3 teams for 3 formats.
Furthermore, the commentator expressed concerns over the fitness of Suryakumar Yadav. With the kind of game and shots that Suryakumar Yadav plays, it could get difficult for the player to be fit and deliver in all 3 formats. Currently, India is facing Sri Lanka in the 3-match ODI series and Suryakumar is part of the squad.
