Steve Smith is generally considered the test specialist for Australia. While there is no denying that the player has a great hold in the longest format, his T20 game is still as strong. Returning to the BBL after last season’s disaster, the right-handed batter, who had previously played for the Sixers, had a successful comeback, scoring 36 runs off of 27 pitches. Playing for Sydney Sixers, against Adelaide Strikers, Steve Smith scored his first-ever century in this competition. Smashing the bowlers all across the ground, batting at the strike rate of 180.36, Smith scored 101 runs from 56 balls with the help of 5 fours and 7 sixes.

Thanks to the century by Steve Smith, Sydney Sixers reached a gigantic target of 204 runs. In response to this, Adelaide Strikers were all-out for 144 runs within 19 overs. The knock helped Steve Smith reach a rare milestone. He became only the 4th player to now have a century in both BBL and IPL. Apart from Steve Smith, Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Shane Watson are others to have reached this feat.

Smith was declared man of the match for his stellar performance. “You need luck sometimes. I got into a nice groove, and the wicket played nicely. Patterson played an anchor’s role, it was a nice partnership with him. I have been able to play both sides of the wicket. I have had three knocks on my knee, it’s a bit sore over the last few days. Great atmosphere here. Nice to play on these smaller grounds as you feel the crowd is very close and right next to you,” Smith said.

Sydney Sixers were put to bat first. Smith had some good luck after being put to bat when a Harry Conway delivery hit the stumps after striking his pads but the bails were left in place. With the help of Smith’s century, Sydney Sixers are now at top of the BBL points table. This innings by Steve Smith not just surprised those seeing this match in the stadium but also those on TV.
