The biggest match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 will be played tonight at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru between Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Chennai Super Kings with the last playoffs spot on the line.

As of writing, on 18th May, a total of 3 teams have confirmed their place in the IPL 2024 Playoffs, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Meanwhile, five teams have been eliminated so far, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the moment is the favourite of the two teams to seal the 4th playoffs spot with having a 2 points advantage over RCB and is currently placed 4th in the league table with 14 points compared to RCB at 7th with 12 points and a win is must for the home side to qualify.

Chennai Super Kings can still finish in Top 2 in IPL 2024

While RCB needs a win to qualify for the IPL 2024 Playoffs, Chennai Super Kings could still reach the top 2 in the IPL 2024 league phase. The benefits of finishing in the top 2 are great for both the top 2 teams. The top 2 teams will play against each other in Playoff 1, the winner will qualify for the Final while the loser will get another opportunity to play against the winner of the Eliminator between 3rd and 4th in Qualifier 2. Currently, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have sealed the top spot and Rajasthan Royals occupy the 2nd spot, but CSK still stands an opportunity to finish in 2nd spot.

For an opportunity at the top 2, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will have to win against RCB to have a chance top 2 finish. Rajasthan Royals is currently 2nd with 16 points with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.273 while CSK currently sits 4th with 14 points and an NRR of +0.528 and a win for the yellow side would be enough for them to get to 2nd spot with 16 points and better NRR.

But there isn’t the end. Other than winning their match, Chennai Super Kings will have to hope that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the very last match of the league phase on the 19th May, Sunday.
