IND VS AUS 2nd T20: Former Team India batter Sunil Gavaskar has slammed India’s decision to send Axar Patel prior to Dinesh Karthik in the batting order in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series against Aaron Finch-led Australian National Cricket Team. Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was chosen over young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the playing XI for the first T20I against Australia, was able to manage only 6 runs in the match. However, it is also noteworthy that, Axar Patel came out to bat in the 14th over after the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav prior to Karthik and this move of the Indian team management came under the scanner as well.

IND VS AUS 2nd T20: Dinesh Karthik is expected to do well in the next game

Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar has also said that if the team management thinks Dinesh Karthik is a better batter than Axar Patel then he should walk in to bat even if it is the 12th or 13th over as well.

“If you think that he (Karthik) is a better batsman than Axar Patel, then he should come into bat even if it is the 12th or 13th over. All this thing about coming in only for the last 3-4 overs is not the kind of thing that should be looked at. We should not be going by theory,” he said on Sports Today.

Sunil Gavaskar further added that the Indian Team will have to make sure that they don’t fall into the trap of theories if they want to succeed in future games as well as in the upcoming marquee event – T20 World Cup.

“If you see how English cricket has changed by not going by theory, they are now playing very free cricket. They are not going by theory that this could happen only if this happens. Look at the difference in their cricket and the difference in their results. India needs to make sure that they don’t fall into the trap of theories. They have got to look at the practicality of the situation at hand and take decisions accordingly,” concluded Sunil Gavaskar.
