IND vs NZ: After a disappointing T20 World Cup, India moved to New Zealand for the white-ball tour. Team India started well with a 1-0 series win in the three-match T20I series under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. But there was one thing that raised many eyebrows. It was the selection of the playing XI in the two games that were played. Especially Rishabh Pant, who got a chance in both games and failed miserably, scoring 6 and 11 in two innings.

Many questioned the decision to keep Pant in the XI despite Sanju Samson being on the bench. However, after consistent opportunities, Pant failed to deliver in the shorter format. Former Indian cricketer Reetinder Sodhi has also opened up about the decision to play Pant in the T20I XI. He also said that the 24-year-old is now becoming a liability in the T20 internationals for India.

Notably, India rested their senior players like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli to provide more chances to the youngsters in the T20I series. That is the reason that Samson was also picked. Unfortunately, he did not have the opportunity. That is what Sodhi said. In an interview with India News, the former Indian cricketer said,

“He (Rishabh Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments. When you give too many chances, the problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys.”

He also added that the 24-year-old has already had too many chances and that it is time to tell him clearly to perform or perish. Notably, Pant was benched in the first four group matches for India in the T20 World Cup. But after Dinesh Karthik picked up an injury, he came into the team.

But there as well, he could not do much and registered two single-digit scores in two outings, including the semi-final. He scored 3 against Zimbabwe and 6 against England in the semi-final. Furthermore, Sodhi urged that if Pant doesn’t perform, then it is time to remove him from the team. The 24-year-old is the vice-captain in both the T20I and ODI series against New Zealand as well.
