IND VS NZ: “He’s Looking Like The Vintage Rohit Sharma”: Wasim Jaffer

IND VS NZ: Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian hitter, is happy with Rohit Sharma’s resurgence with the willow. After analyzing the captain’s recent matches’ performances, Jaffer came to the conclusion that the opener appeared to have found his mojo again. Rohit, 35, had a difficult 2022 during which he struggled with both form and fitness difficulties. But he got off to a strong start this year.
He had two half-centuries in five innings prior to the Tuesday, January 24, Indore ODI match against New Zealand. In Indore, he went one step further and ended his century drought. Recording his first three-figure score in the format in more than a thousand days. Rohit scored 101 runs off just 85 balls, contributing to Shubman Gill’s 212-run opening stand (112 off 78).

IND VS NZ: “In Magnificent Form”: Wasim Jaffer

“Rohit has been in magnificent form in this series. He’s looking like the vintage Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill is just carrying on from the last 2-3 innings. You understand that it’s not going to be like that throughout that 50 overs. When the openers give you such a blistering start, in 50 overs it’s very difficult to bat at 9-10 an over for such a long period. Even though it was a good wicket, small boundaries, the way they played, it didn’t look like they were slogging.”
Jaffer said
Jaffer claimed that it was never going to be simple to maintain the rate at which Rohit and Gill were batting. Even though India lost their stride once the opening stand was broken. India moved from 212 for one to 313 for six after the opening partnership was broken. But the hosts were able to reach 385/9 thanks to a 54-run seventh-wicket partnership between Hardik Pandya (54 off 38) and Shardul Thakur (25 off 17).

When analyzing India’s series-long batting effort, Jaffer was impressed by the Men in Blue’s aggressive approach. But he wants the group to maintain that mentality into the 2023 ODI World Cup as well.
IND VS NZ: India vs New Zealand, 3rd ODI
“Whenever India have batted first, they have got in excess of (close to) 350 all the time. That shows how they are approaching 50-over cricket, which is very exciting, and hope it continues since it’s a World Cup year. It was the same in the T20 format, but suddenly when India goes into multi-nation tournaments, sometimes we go back into that safe mode option.”
Said Wasim Jaffer
Regarding India’s performance in the third ODI, Jaffer made it quite obvious that the reason India lost wickets so quickly after the double-century partnership between Rohit and Shubman Gill was broken was that the openers’ created momentum had been shattered. He acknowledged Rohit and Gill, the opening pair, for their fantastic start. The lowest total achieved by Team India in the last five ODIs in which they batted first is 349.
