By the age of 23, Shubman Gill has already proved himself to be India’s star batter by having centuries in all the formats. Opportunities have not come easy for Shubman Gil as it was believed that the player was not fit to play all the three formats. The young Indian opener made his debut in the test format and was part of India’s historic victory at the Gabba on the 2020-2021 Australia tour. Since then he was on and off the team but things changed after his first IPL victory.

In 2022, Shubman Gill was picked up by Gujarat Titans and the new team won their maiden IPL trophy. By then Gill had missed out on his centuries a couple of times by getting out in the 90s. However, the wait finally came to an end when in August, he scored his maiden ODI century in Zimbabwe, followed by his maiden test century in December and then his T20 century earlier this year.

There are many similarities says Dinesh Karthik on Shubman Gill and Sachin Tendulkar

Dinesh Karthik Recalls Similarities Between Shubman Gill and Sachin Tendulkar
Shubman Gill

Despite all this, he was not part of India’s playing XI in the first two games of the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Nonetheless, he replaced KL Rahul in the third test. After an average performance in that one, Shubman Gill stood strong in the Ahmedabad test. The opener scored his second test century before being dismissed on 128 runs. Discussing Gill’s gameplay, Dinesh Karthik pulled out the similarities between him and Sachin Tendulkar.

“There are many similarities, technically. You know, the positions they get into, tall batters. Sachin Tendulkar is not tall, but he stands tall at the crease and is always on top of the ball. Shubman Gill is very similar, high hands, and he has this trigger movement where he goes back and across and waits for it. That’s why you see sometimes he might inside edge it because of the way his bat swing is. But there’s slightly less movement on flat tracks. The speed at which he brings the bat down is what makes him really special,” Dinesh Karthik said. The day 4 of the 4th Border-Gavaskar trophy game ended with Virat Kohli reaching his much-awaited test century and India getting a 92 run-lead. Australia sent Travis Head and Matthew Kuhnemann to play in the remaining 6 overs left in the day.
