India’s stand-in captain for the first ODI in Mumbai starting March 17, Hardik Pandya admits that Shreyas Iyer’s absence is going to impact the team and the men in blue will miss the services of the middle-order batter. Iyer has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series due to a lower back injury for an indefinite period.

Prior to the start of the three-match ODI series, India dealt a huge blow when Iyer was ruled out of the series due to a recurring back injury. He felt discomfort in his lower back in the fourth and final Test of the four-match series and didn’t come out to bat in India’s first innings and was eventually ruled out of the Test. Later it was confirmed by the board that he will not take part in the series and has been sent to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the recovery and rehabilitation process.

India will surely miss the services of Iyer, who has been a regular feature in the one-day side. Iyer’s game is well suited for the 50-overs format and has proved his worth as a reliable batter in the middle-order. In 42 ODI games, Iyer has scored 1631 runs at a staggering average of 46.6. These numbers prove why Iyer is an integral part of the one-day team.

Speaking on his injury and unavailability for the series, Pandya said Iyer will be a big miss for the home side and India will have to look for his apt replacement. Pandya clarified that he is also unsure of Iyer’s return, saying that there is no timeline and the team is only hoping for the best.

“It is going to impact us, obviously, we are going to miss him but we will have to slowly start finding solutions if he is not around (for a long time). If he is around he is more than welcome but if he is not then there is a lot of time to think about it and see how we can go forward. Obviously there is no timeline but we have to hope for the best. I have been in that situation where the back could be a problem,” Hardik Pandya said ahead of the first ODI against Australia.
