IPL 2022: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) failed to secure a playoff berth for the third time in four seasons. Many including fans and experts alike expected KKR to struggle in the tournament. However, to everyone’s surprise, KKR won three of the first four matches of the season. But post that, they went haywire losing five matches on the trot. KKR couldn’t recover from there on the back of erratic performances from both the departments. Looking for more IPL cricket betting sites for the 2022 season? Read here.

After Alex Hales opted out of the tournament KKR had a big shoe to fill in the opening slot. They tried as many as five opening combinations but nothing clicked for the two-time champions. Hence, they failed to capitalize in the first six overs having a scoring rate of 7.26, the third-worst in the tourney. Moreover, they lost 27 wickets in the powerplay itself the worst figures for any team.

Death bowling issues cost the two-time champions dearly, as they were unable to put a stop to the opposition in the final innings. Hence, they managed to win only 6 out of 14 games and ended with 12 points. Since IPL 2023 will be a mini auction they will retain most of the players. However, they will release these three players who had an underwhelming season.

IPL 2022: 3 Players KKR will release ahead of IPL 2023

1) Sheldon Jackson

KKR had high hopes for their domestic recruit but he failed to fulfill his responsibility yet again. Sheldon Jackson has scored heaps of runs in first-class cricket but is yet to crack the IPL. In 5 innings, the KKR wicket-keeper accumulated only 23 runs with a strike rate of 88.46 and an average of 5.75.

Jackson, with so much experience under his belt, failed to score 11 in the final over in the first encounter against Rajasthan Royals (RR). The 35-year-old was sensational behind the wicket but KKR are unlikely to retain him ahead of the auction next year.

2) Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch went unsold during the IPL 2022 mega auctions. Later, he was bought in as a replacement for Alex Hales who opted out due to bio-bubble fatigue. KKR was Finch’s ninth IPL team which clearly reflects his inconsistency at the top of the order. Finch was dismissed for seven in his first innings of the season.

He bounced back with a sparkling knock of 58 from 28 balls against RR. However, the Australia white-ball captain could manage only 17 runs in the next three games. Finch’s lack of runs at the top of the order was hurting KKR badly. Eventually, Ajinkya Rahane replaced him at the business end of the tourney. Finch didn’t feature in the last three league games and is likely to be released by the Kolkata-based franchise next year. 3) Ajinkya Rahane

Picking Ajinkya Rahane wasn’t the right decision and the KKR management would have understood that by now. Since his IPL debut, the veteran has played the anchor’s role but it has been a lost cause for the franchises. In 2022 auctions, the India batter was picked KKR for his base price of INR 1 crore.

Rahane scored 44 of 34 runs in the curtain raiser against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) which helped his team seal a comfortable win. Since then, the 34-year-old registered scores of 9,12,7, and 8. Post that, he was ousted from the playing XI. Rahane returned to the team to replace the underperforming Finch. Rahane labored his way to 53 runs of 48 balls in his last two innings. A hamstring injury forced him to sit out for KKR’s final two games of the season. Rahane amassed 133 runs across seven innings and will most likely be released by the franchise.
