IPL 2022 LIVE: Former NZ spinner Daniel Vettori and former SA leg spinner Imran Tahir have called for including wides in the DRS spectrum. Both bowlers have also batted to include height no-balls even if there is no dismissal. Vettori’s statement came after last night’s game between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals when in the 19th over umpire called three tight wides, leaving RR captain Sanju Samson fumed. In the 19th over of Kolkata Knight Riders’ run-chase, RR bowler Prasidh Krishna bowled three balls that were very close to being called wide. Captain Sanju Samson contended by saying the batter had moved before the delivery of the ball, however, despite consistent appeals, umpire Nitin Pandit called them wide. This left Samson infuriated. He even needlessly called wide for a catch-review to show his discontent.

“Absolutely [players should be allowed to review wides]. The players should be able to decide in such crucial matters. Today it is a little bit different where it always looked like KKR are going to win. But we have sat here so many times and seen decisions go against bowlers that are so close and the umpire has got it wrong. So therefore the players should have some avenues towards rectifying those mistakes. That’s why DRS was brought in: to rectify mistakes. I would like to see that happen. And players are very good judges of that. They get it right more often than not.”

IPL 2022 LIVE: Imran Tahir And Kumar Sangakkara called for consistency in such decisions

Former South African leg spinner Imran Tahir, who went unsold in IPL 2022 auction, is still an active player. He matched Vettori in his opinion. Tahir advocated for the players’ right to review the crucial calls. He said as there is already not much for bowlers in the game, it becomes important to review the crucial call even if it is a wide ball.

Rajasthan Royals coach Kumar Sangakkara accounted for the fact that those wides were not crucial, but it is important to ensure consistency in such calls. Sangakkara conceded that the Royals haven’t played good cricket in their last two games to be on the winning side but such crucial calls, no matter how small, do count in high-pressure situations.

Vettori, who has been a coach in the Indian Premier League, further substantiated, saying that the umpire can be fed all the information related to the situation. How far is the wide line, how far has the batsman moved before the delivery of the ball and then leave it to his wisdom to make the decision?
