IPL 2023: The 2016 IPL champions, Sunrisers Hyderabad, caught the attention of everyone when they released their captain, Kane Williamson. This decision came on Tuesday when the franchise submitted its list of retained and released players to the BCCI ahead of the auction. A total of 85 players were released by 10 IPL franchises. The mini-auction is all set to take place in Kochi on December 23.

Notably, Williamson was retained by SRH in the last season for a price of INR 14 crore. However, they let him go after a poor performance in the 2022 season. Williamson captained the team for the last couple of seasons. Aside from him, the franchises released another well-known name. It was West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran. As a result, the Orange Army will enter the upcoming auction with a purse value of INR 42.25 crore.

Williamson joined the SRH in 2015, and since then, he has been part of the team. He also played in the 2016 season, in which they won the title. His breakthrough performance came in the 2018 season when he led SRH to the finals of the tournament. Williamson also ended 2018 as the highest run-getter with 735 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.50 with eight half-centuries.

Overall, Williamson has played 76 IPL matches for the franchise and scored 2,101 runs at 36.22 with 18 half-centuries. After being released, the Kiwi skipper revealed that he was aware of the decision. In a discussion with the media, he was asked about SRH’s decision. He said,

“It wasn’t a surprise when it [retention list] was officially released. That’s the way it goes, I had a really enjoyable time at SRH, I have a lot of fond memories. There are a lot of competitions around the world, and the IPL is certainly an amazing completion to be a part of. You see players play for different teams all the time.”

Williamson will lead New Zealand against India in T20Is and ODIs starting on November 18. Both teams will play three T20Is and three ODIs. The Kiwi skipper didn’t have a great T20 World Cup campaign. His numbers in 2022 are also not good. He has played 12 T20Is and scored 382 runs. But his strike rate is only 119, which has caught the attention of the critics.
