Mumbai Indians had got off to a terrible start as they lost the wickets of Cameron Green, Ishan Kishan, and Rohit Sharma in quick succession. They did settle down in the middle overs but were rattled by Matheesha Pathirana’s pace in the death overs.

CSK vs MI: Matheesha Pathirana’s brilliant spell in death restricts Mumbai Indians to a below-par total

MS Dhoni brought Pathirana into the attack in the 13th over of Mumbai Indians’ innings as they looked to attack the Chennai Super Kings‘ spinners. The young pacer was on the mark right from the first delivery and conceded just 5 runs off his first over to apply brakes to the MI innings.

Matheesha Pathirana then came in to bowl the 15th over and gave away just 3 runs against well set Nehal Wadhera and dangerous Tristan Stubbs. However, he had saved his best for the last two overs of his spell where he did the actual damage.

Nehal Wadhera was looking dangerous as he had took on the CSK spinners but couldn’t do so against Pathirana. He shifted towards his off stump in order to play a big shot towards the on side. The CSK pacer saw that and bowled a sharp yorker that went on to crash his middle stump.

Matheesha Pathirana then came in to bowl the final over of Mumbai Indians’ innings and started his over with a fullish delivery outside the off-stump. Arshad Khan sliced it towards deep point where Ruturaj Gaikwad took a brilliant catch on the second attempt.

On the 4th delivery of the final over, the CSK pacer bowled a slower delivery to deceive Tristan Stubbs who was early on to his shot as Ravindra Jadeja took a good catch at cover. Matheesha Pathirana eventually finished with the figures of 3 for 15 in the CSK vs MI contest.
