Following his on-field altercation with Virat Kohli during the game between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Lucknow, Gautam Gambhir responded to criticisms made by news anchor Rajat Sharma. The editor-in-chief of India TV and a former DDCA president, Rajat Sharma accused Gambhir of being jealous of Kohli’s success and fame, and of behaving rudely during the confrontation.

After RCB’s victory on Monday, May 1st, the verbal argument between Kohli and Gambhir stole the headlines. Rajat Sharma made a recent remark regarding the altercation between Gambhir and Kohli during their match, implying that Gambhir has become conceited since entering the political arena.

“(Gautam) Gambhir has been provoked. After fighting the elections and becoming a Member of the Parliament, Gambhir’s ego has increased even more. How Virat Kohli’s popularity worries Gambhir was witnessed yet again, clearly on the ground. (Virat) Kohli is a player who is always aggressive, doesn’t tolerate any nonsense and so he gave Gambhir an apt reply. In all, what Gambhir did is against the sportsman spirit. This behaviour is not befitting of a former India player and a current Member of Parliament. Such incidents ruin the reputation of cricket and should not have happened,” Rajat Sharma said live on India TV.

Rajat had previously served as DDCA president from 2018 to 2019, but resigned from the post citing vested interests among DDCA members. However, his reinstatement by a DDCA ombudsman was opposed by the Association’s directors, and in 2020, Rohan Jaitley was elected unopposed to the position.

On Wednesday, Gambhir shared a cryptic tweet that perplexed cricket enthusiasts. Later it was found that it was directed to Rajat Sharma. Gambhir’s tweet didn’t mention any particular individual, but it was perceived by many as a reaction to Sharma’s remarks.

After the match between RCB and LSG earlier this week, an unpleasant incident occurred on the field involving Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, and Naveen-ul-Haq. As a result, all three were severely sanctioned by the match referee. Kohli and Gambhir were penalized with the forfeiture of their entire match fee, while Naveen was fined an amount equal to 50% of his match fee.
