“People who don’t have very clean (conventional) action, batsmen have a difficult time picking it and when trying to go after the bowler. But his consistency, variation, pace makes him special. What’s important is to keep an eye on how much cricket he is playing,” MS Dhoni said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
“I would prefer him to not play red-ball cricket, not even get close to it, even play only ICC tournaments with ODIs and keep the rest as less as possible, because he’s not someone who’ll change a lot. This is what he’ll do. So you can always use him at crucial times,” the CSK skipper further added about Matheesha Pathirana’s ability.
The MI side had got off to a terrible start as they lost the wickets of Cameron Green, Ishan Kishan, and Rohit Sharma in quick succession. They did settle down in the middle overs but were rattled by Matheesha Pathirana’s pace in the death overs.
The young CSK pacer took the crucial wicket of dangerous-looking Nehal Wadhera with an excellent yorker. He then dismissed Tristan Stubbs and Arshad Khan in the final over of Mumbai Indians’ innings as the MI batters constantly failed to score boundaries against him.
Matheesha Pathirana has looked in some brilliant form right from the word go in the ongoing IPL 2023 season and has changed the fortunes of the Chennai Super Kings’ bowling department. His form will be crucial for the MS Dhoni-led side as they will look to qualify for the playoffs of the cash-rich league.
