The Board of Control for India in India (BCCI) is going all out to ensure the smooth conduction of the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. The 15th edition of the tournament promises to be grander and is expected to serve the viewers with a lot of entertainment and nail-biting matches.

BCCI has decided to expand the tournament to a ten-team event. Two new teams have been roped in for the league and the fans will see ten teams fighting with each other for lifting the trophy from the 2022 season. 

Lucknow and Ahemdabad are the two new IPL franchises alongside Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals.

Notably, BCCI hosted an auction in the second half of the last year to rope in two new franchises. Due to the introduction of two new teams, a mega auction will be hosted ahead of IPL 2022. All the teams will be given a purse of INR 90 crore to build their squad from scratch.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction schedule

IPL 2022

BCCI has decided to make the IPL 2022 mega auction a two-day event. The auction will take place on February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru. A total of 1214 players had registered for the high-profile auction. The Indian board has trimmed the final auction pool to 590 players. The auction pool features 228 capped players, 355 uncapped players, and seven cricketers from the associate nations. Also, 370 Indian and 220 overseas cricketers will be going under the hammer during the mega-auction.

IPL 2022 Retention Rules

Ahead of the mega auction, all eight franchises were asked to pick up a maximum of four players for IPL 2021. The teams could retain a maximum of three Indians and two overseas players for the upcoming edition. 

Notably, the process was completed by November 2021 as the teams retained a total of 27 players in their squads. The 27 players include 19 Indian cricketers 8 overseas players. Also, four uncapped players also managed to earn the trust of their respective teams. 

Following the retention by the eight franchises, the two new franchises picked three players each from the draft.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

IPL 2022

The defending champion Chennai Super Kings can be considered as one of the most successful franchises of all time. They have won the trophy as many as four times in their ten-year stint in the T20 Championship. Led by MS Dhoni, CSK will start the tournament as favorites and will aim to lift the cup for the second consecutive time.

Lucknow Super Giants

The highest bid was made for Lucknow during the team auction. Rajiv Goenka’s RPSG Group was the highest bidder as they paid a whopping Rs. 7090 crores for owing the team. Notably, this isn’t the first time that RPSG are a part of IPL. 

Earlier, the team owned the Rising Pune Supergiants team for the 2016 and 2017 editions. Making the speculations true, the franchise has picked KL Rahul as the captain. However, the franchise surprised the viewers with their other two retentions as they have picked Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi.

Though the franchise is yet to make an official announcement regarding their skipper, it is learned that Hardik will be donning the captain hat for the very first time.

IPL 2022 schedule

The Board of Control for India (BCCI) is yet to announce the schedule for the tournament. They are expected to make the schedule public following the conclusion of the mega auction. 

The tournament will start at the end of March 2022 or the beginning of April 2022 and is likely to extend till May 2022. As per the tentative plans, IPL 2022 can run from April 2 with the final scheduled on June 03, 2022. 

IPL 2022 Venues

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, BCCI opted for a new approach in the last season. They hosted the tournament in six major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. However, things didn’t go as per the plan.

Due to Covid-19 cases in the camp, BCCI had to shift the second half of the tournament to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This time around, BCCI again plans to conduct the league in India but with proper arrangements and precautions. Reports suggest that the board can conduct the entire tournament in Maharashtra with UAE as the backup option.

Vivo has been replaced by TATA as the title sponsor for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. Notable, Vivo had signed a deal of Rs 2200 crores for title sponsorship rights from 2018 to 2021. 

The company gave 2020 a miss due to the growing dislike in India towards the Chinese Companies. They were back as sponsors during the 2021 season but have now decided to pass the deal to TATA. Notably, TATA will be paying the same amount to BCCI as Vivo for the 2022 edition i.e INR 440 crores.

Star India is the sole owner of the telecasting rights for IPL from the 2018 to 2022 season. The Disney-owned company paid a whopping INR 16,347.5 crore for five years. They also had live streaming rights.
