IPL 2022: Raj Angad Bawa, a promising allrounder, has continued his climb after securing a multi-crore deal with IPL team Punjab Kings at the mega auction on Sunday. He has stated that he admired Shikhar Dhawan. Also that sharing the dressing room with him at Punjab Kings will be a great experience for him.

Following a three-way struggle that included Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, PBKS got Raj for Rs 2 crore. Punjab Kings paid INR 8.25 crore for Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru.

In the U-19 World Cup 2022, Raj took nine wickets and scored 252 runs in six matches. Raj’s grandpa Tarlochan Singh Bawa had played with the likes of Balbir Singh Senior, Leslie Claudius, and Keshav Dutts to win independent India’s first Olympic hockey gold in London at the 1948 Games.  Raj’s father, Sukhwinder Singh Bawa, is the cricket coach at DAV Chandigarh.

“Excited to meet him (Shikhar Dhawan) and see if he knows about it. I have always looked up to him and sharing the dressing room with him would be a great experience.”

Raj made headlines when he broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record for the best individual score by an Indian in a U19 World Cup. Raj’s father, Sukhwinder Singh Bawa, had also coached the 2011 World Cup Man of the Tournament Yuvraj Singh. He said he was delighted to see the Punjab Kings choose Raj in the auction and that he is unconcerned about his price tag. In a group encounter against Uganda, Raj smashed an unbeaten 162 off 108 deliveries.

“I am not concerned about the price tag. He has gone one step ahead after the World Cup performance. The real test for him as a cricketer comes now.”

Following the departure of Wasim Jaffer, Punjab Kings fielding coach Jonty Rhodes has taken on the additional responsibility of batting coach. Jonty has been the fielding coach for the franchise for the past few seasons. Rhodes is not only regarded as one of the greatest fielders of all time, but he also scored over 8000 runs for South Africa.

The 52-year-old also appears to have a key role in the franchise’s decision-making process. Last week, he was at the IPL auction table with head coach Anil Kumble and other PBKS executives.  In 245 One-Day Internationals, Rhodes scored 5935 runs and 2532 runs in 52 Tests.

While Kumble will concentrate with the spinners, Damien Wright will continue to train the fast bowlers. Andy Flower, who was the team’s assistant coach last season, has been named head coach of the new Lucknow Super Giants franchise.
