IPL 2023: 5 Reasons Behind Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Early Elimination
Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 15. After the defeat in the GT vs SRH game, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been officially eliminated from IPL 2023. The SRH franchise have just won 4 out of their 12 games in IPL 2023 and have only 8 points against their name in the points table. Even if they win their next two matches, they will reach 12 points which won’t be enough for them to reach the playoffs.

These are the 5 Reasons behind Sunrisers Hyderabad’s early elimination from IPL 2023:
1. Inconsistency in selection
Harry Brook was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping INR 13.25 crore before IPL 2023. He first batted in the middle order and was then promoted up the order.
Brook was again pushed down the order and was eventually dropped from the playing XI. Mayank Agarwal too was dropped from the side after a string of failures despite him being the biggest Indian name in their batting lineup.
2. Poor performance from overseas batters
Skipper Aiden Markram has struggled for form in IPL 2023. In 11 matches games he has just scored 217 runs at an average of 21.70. Sunrisers Hyderabad must have expected Markram to act as the backbone of their batting lineup but he failed to do so.
Harry Brook has scored a ton for them but couldn’t play anymore impactful innings. He scored just 163 runs at an average of 20.38 and a strike rate of 121.64. Heinrich Klaasen is the only overseas batter who has actually performed well with the bat.
3. Mediocre bowling by SRH’s bowlers
On paper Sunrisers Hyderabad have a brilliant bowling combination but it has delivered mediocre results in IPL 2023. Marco Jansen, T Natarajan and Umran Malik have conceded runs at an economy rate of more than 9 and haven’t taken enough wickets as well.
While Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mayank Markande have bowled decently, SRH have collectively failed as a unit. Washington Sundar too scalped just 3 wickets before getting ruled out of the tournament.
4. Unavailability of key players
The trio of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen weren’t available for selection for the initial few games which terribly affected their combination. Their key all-rounder Washington Sundar too was ruled out of IPL 2023 midway due to a hamstring injury making things worse for them.
5. Losing games they should have won
SRH lost the games against Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders which they should have won comfortably. They were in a dominating position in all the three games.
Sunrisers Hyderabad needed just 38 runs in 30 balls with 5 wickets in hand in the game against KKR but they failed to chase down the target. They lost wickets in a quick succession as they have done throughout the IPL 2023.
Lucknow Super Giants needed more than 90 runs in just 7 overs. However, Aiden Markram decided to give the 16th over to part-time spinner Abhishek Sharma conceded 31 runs and LSG won the game in the final over.
