CSK won the toss and opted to bat first. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway aimed to continue their good form, and they did not disappoint. Gaikwad, who had scored 47 runs in the previous game, looked to replicate his performance. The right-handed batter scored 37 runs off 31 deliveries before Sikandar Raza dismissed him. Meanwhile, Devon Conway scored his fifth half-century of IPL 2023, amassing an unbeaten 92 runs off just 52 balls. His innings were crucial to Chennai’s total of 200 runs.

Shivam Dube scored a quick 28 off 17 balls, while Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja scored 10 and 12 runs respectively. Skipper MS Dhoni’s cameo at the end helped Chennai post a formidable total on the board. Punjab’s bowling performance was below par. Rahul Chahar took one wicket and conceded 35 runs in his four overs, while Sikandar Raza took one wicket and gave away 31 runs in three overs. Arshdeep Singh got Shivam Dube’s wicket but gave away 37 runs in his four overs. Despite Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja’s low scores, Conway’s brilliant knock kept Chennai on track for a big total. Chennai struggled to score runs in the last few overs, but skipper MS Dhoni’s two sixes off the final two deliveries helped them cross the 200-run mark and set a target of 201 for Punjab Kings.
