IPL 2023: ‘Lack of Partnerships Created Pressure on Lower Order’ – Shubman Gill on the Defeat
Shubman Gill added that Gujarat Titans should have chased down 131 against the Delhi Capitals and secured an easy win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 2. However, after restricting Delhi Capitals to 130 for eight, Gujarat Titans made a poor start. They were reduced to 32 for four in 6.4 overs.
Although captain Hardik Pandya and Abhinav Manohar added 62 runs for the fourth wicket, their efforts weren’t enough as the Titans lost by five runs as well.
“The wicket wasn’t so bad. We bowled really well. We couldn’t stitch partnerships in the top order, which created pressure on lower order. The wicket was tough to bat, but with the kind of batting we have, chasing 131 shouldn’t have been a problem,” Shubman Gill was quoted as saying in the post-match press conference.
Shubman Gill also added that the Delhi Capitals spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, kept the Titans under pressure in their run-chase. Kuldeep removed David Miller while giving away only 15 runs as well off four overs. Axar Patel couldn’t make a breakthrough but bowled at an economy rate of six as well.
“As a player and a batter, we are all bound to have one off day” – Shubman Gill
“DC spinners bowled well and it was difficult to hit boundaries,” he stated.
Shubman Gill also said that Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya had an off day with the bat, but also gave credit to the Delhi Capitals bowlers for bowling accurately in the death overs as well. Hardik remained unbeaten at 59 off 53 balls with seven fours, but couldn’t take the team home.
“As a player and a batter, we are all bound to have one off day. It was just one of those off days where he backed himself, which every batter should. He backed himself to hit those runs, but DC bowlers bowled some good yorkers in the end,” Shubman Gill concluded.
