IPL 2023: Litton Das Ruled Out; KKR Roped in Hard-Hitting West Indian Opener for Remainder of the Season
IPL 2023: The two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled in the ongoing 16th edition of the tournament so far. They are ranked at 8th place with only three wins out of nine. KKR is struggling with the form of their big stars, while injuries have also hampered them to a large extent. Skipper Shreyas Iyer was ruled out ahead of the start, which led the franchise to appoint Nitish Rana as the stand-in captain.

It looked like KKR has some other issues to address if they want to reach the next stage. However, to address some of those, the franchise has roped in veteran West Indian opener Johnson Charles as a new recruit for the remainder of the season. On Thursday, the franchise made this announcement as Charles will replace Litton Das in the second leg of the competition.

IPL 2023: Litton Das to miss the 16th edition due to family reasons
Litton featured only in one game for the franchise this season. However, he went home due to a family emergency in the last week of April. He played the game against the Delhi Capitals but didn’t have a great debut. Litton got out after scoring just four runs in his debut game in the IPL. After that, the return of Jason Roy and the form of Rahmanullah Gurbaz kept him away from the playing XI. On Thursday, KKR announced,
“Litton Das has had to return to Bangladesh earlier today (Friday 28 April) due to an urgent family medical emergency. Our wishes go out to him and his family to make it through this difficult time.”
Not just with the bat, he was disappointing behind the wicket as well. He missed two stumpings of Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel in that game. KKR lost that game by four wickets in the end. Notably, Litton joined the KKR camp in the second week of April due to national duties. His countryman, Shakib Al Hasan, earlier withdrew from the competition.
On the other hand, Charles is a wicketkeeper batter who has the experience of playing in numerous T20 leagues around the world. He has featured in 41 T20Is and scored 971 runs. He was also a member of the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup-winning West Indian teams. KKR has signed him for a base price of INR 50 lakh. Kolkata will be playing their next game on Thursday against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
