With the departure of the team’s captain Sam Curran to prepare with the England cricket team squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the team’s vice-captain Jitesh Sharma is set to captain the side against Sunrisers Hyderabad in place of regular captain Shikhar Dhawan.

Punjab-based Punjab Kings (PBKS) will play its final match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign on Sunday, 19 May, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After a disappointing IPL 2023, finishing just 8th out of the 10 teams, the IPL 2024 turned out to be another disappointment for the Punjabi side. As of writing this, Punjab Kings currently finds itself at number 9 in the points with 10 points in 13 matches, becoming the 2nd team to be eliminated from the playoffs race after Mumbai Indians.

The team suffered miserably due to the poor form of the entire squad. Their biggest achievement in the IPL 2024 would be successfully chasing down a target of 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens. Jonny Bairstow scored a brilliant century while Shashank Singh also played an instrumental knock.

Jitesh Sharma to captain Punjab Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sam Curran was made the captain of the mid-season after regular captain Shikhar Dhawan suffered an injury. But with Curran back home to join the England team camp much like other English players, Jitesh Sharma is supposed to lead the team in their last match of the IPL 2024 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The Indian wicketkeeper batter was a regular in the Indian T20I side but has struggled to find his form in the IPL 2024 and has mostly been used as an outfield player. As a result, the 30-year-old couldn’t find a place in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. Jitesh has played 13 matches in the IPL 2024 and has scored only 155 runs at an average of 14.09 and a strike rate of 122.05. Jitesh and Punjab Kings will look to end the season on a high on Sunday, 19th May against SRH, who have already qualified for the playoffs.
