After Virat Kohli stepped down from the Indian team captaincy, Rohit Sharma was named the new captain. Since then, the Indian team has featured in 68 international matches combined in all three formats. India has played five Tests, 21 ODIs, and 42 T20Is during this period. But unfortunately, Rohit Sharma has featured in only 39 (2 Tests, 8 ODIs, and 29 T20Is) out of the 68 games India has played. However, the BCCI’s policy for senior players to play fewer games ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup has also been one reason behind this.

But one main reason Rohit has missed these matches has been his injuries and fitness issues. The Indian skipper has been injured more often than not in the past 12 months. On top of that, his batting form hasn’t been that great. His poor form has attracted a lot of backlash for the Indian captain. And now, former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who led India to their maiden ODI World Cup in 1983, has also questioned Rohit’s fitness.

Is Rohit Sharma fit enough? – Kapil Dev makes a big remarks

“There Is Huge Doubt Over His Fitness”- Kapil Dev on India’s Major Concern Over Rohit Sharma Ahead of 2023 ODI World Cup
“There Is Huge Doubt Over His Fitness”- Kapil Dev on India’s Major Concern Over Rohit Sharma Ahead of 2023 ODI World Cup

More recently, Rohit sustained an injury to his left thumb during the second ODI against Bangladesh. As a result he was ruled him out of the test series in December. And over the last year, the Indian captain has been going through various fitness issues. Meanwhile, in a discussion with ABP News, Kapil said that there is a big concern for India regarding Rohit’s fitness issue. He stated that Rohit has been one of the main pillars of the Indian team in the last decade. But his fitness is the main issue. Kapil said,

“There’s no shortcoming in Rohit Sharma. He has everything but I personally think, there is a huge question mark over his fitness. Is he fit enough? Because a captain should be someone who motivates the other players to get fitter, the teammates should feel proud of their captain. I can say with surety that there is a huge doubt over Rohit’s fitness.”

Furthermore, the former skipper also stated that since Rohit has become the full-time captain, he has also been struggling with his form. He pointed out that there is no issue with Rohit’s skills in the game. But he needs to work on his fitness. Rohit Sharma, along with other senior players, has been rested from the T20I series against Sri Lanka. But all will be back for three ODIs starting on January 10. Rohit will be leading the team, while Hardik will be his deputy.
