Mohammed Siraj Moves to No. 1 ODI Bowler’s Rankings With a Sensational Performance Against New Zealand and Sri Lanka

Mohammed Siraj: After thrashing New Zealand 3-0 in the series, India regained the No. 1 ODI spot in the team’s rankings. Meanwhile, Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has also been rewarded for his consistent performance throughout the last 12 months. As a result, Siraj has jumped to the top of the bowler’s rankings in the ODI format. On Wednesday, the ICC released the latest rankings, and Siraj overtook the Kiwi pacer Trent Boult to become the new No. 1 ODI bowler.

Earlier, Boult and Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood were at Nos. 1 and 2. Not only in his form, Siraj has been exceptional for India in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of the action for more than six months due to his back injury. And it will not be a wrong statement to say that Siraj’s presence didn’t let anyone miss Bumrah. He has taken the most wickets in the power play since the 2019 ODI World Cup. It shows the growth he has shown in the past year.

Mohammed Siraj achieves No. 1 ODI rankings for the first time in his career

It was not long ago when Siraj wasn’t considered in the white-ball team of India. He was part of the test team as a third-seamer. But the last 12 months have been career-changing for the pacer. He worked hard with Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who challenged the pacer to work on some areas. Siraj ended the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka as the highest wicket-taker. He took nine wickets in just three innings.
Meanwhile, against New Zealand, he was also the pick of the bowlers in the first two games. He took five wickets in the first two games. In 2023, he has already taken 14 wickets in just five innings at a brilliant average of 10.57 and a best of 4/32. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami has also moved 11 spots up to the 32nd spot. On the other hand, there have been multiple changes in the ODI batter rankings.
Babar Azam is at the top with a healthy gap. Then, after some incredible performances most recently, Shubman Gill broke into the top 10 and moved up to the sixth place. He pushed Virat Kohli from one place down to 7th spot. Gill ended the New Zealand series with 360 runs in three innings, while Virat only scored 53 runs. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored a century in the third and final ODI, has also moved one place up to ninth.
