Riley Norton: Known more about his journey as a U-19 cricketer and U-20 rugby professional for South Africa

South Africa’s teenage sporting icon, Riley Norton, is making waves by standing out as a rare sporting commodity in the contemporary era. Blessed with the ability to play both cricket and rugby with the same capacity, Norton is one of the rare talents to have represented South Africa, both in cricket and rugby. The young dual-sport athlete made his first appearance in the 2024 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, which was held in South Africa, and then subsequently went on to feature in the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship a year later.

At present, Norton is all poised to lead the Junior Springboks in a World Rugby U20 Championship final against New Zealand in Italy later today. While his former cricket colleagues, such as Kwena Maphaka and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, went on to transition into cricket, Norton’s dual-sporting ambitions opened up multiple pathways for him in both cricket as well as rugby.

A brief look at Norton’s stint at the 2024 U-19 Cricket World Cup

Norton’s association with cricket has been short-lived thus far, representing South Africa in only eight YODIs. He plays the role of a genuine medium-pace bowling all-rounder and has scored 116 runs at a formidable average of 38.67. With the ball, the talented prodigy has taken 13 wickets at a healthy average of 22.23 and achieved his career-best figures of 4-28 against Sri Lanka U-19.

Throughout the U19 World Cup, he distinguished himself as one of South Africa’s top all-rounders, taking 11 wickets with an average of 18.36 and accumulating 50 runs over three innings, having been out only once. But despite his promising start, Norton withdrew from the cricket scene and has not played a single competitive game since the U-19 World Cup. Instead, he has switched to rugby and has enrolled at Stellenbosch University and joined Maties Rugby, a club where his father also played, during his formative years. At present, Norton is pursuing Investment Management while captaining South Africa’s U20 side at the same time.

Norton’s performance so far in 2025 U20 Rugby World Cup

Norton is in the midst of a sensational run in the ongoing 2025 U20 Rugby World Cup, which has almost neared its business end. Under his leadership, South Africa brushed aside the might Kangaroos by 73-17 and went past England, the defending champs, by 32-22. Moreover, he was also able to prolong his winning streak against Scotland, defeating them by a crushing margin of 73-14.

Things got even better when South Africa entered the semi-final race. In the knockout phase, South Africa took on Argentina and successfully outclassed them by 48-24, thus helping them secure a spot in the final against arch-rivals New Zealand at the Stadio Mario Battaglini in Rovigo. On the back of his recent exploits in cricket and football, Norton has drawn parallels with Namibia’s Rudie van Vuuren, who famously represented the country in both the Cricket and Rugby World Cups in 2003.
