Before India’s highly awaited match against their long-time rival Pakistan on June 9 at the Nassau County International Stadium, captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media to discuss the team’s lineup.

Rohit Sharma talked about Rishabh Pant and disclosed that his decision to include the left-hander was made after observing his performance at the top of the order in the initial matches of the IPL 2024.

During the press conference, the 37-year-old Indian captain explained that the choice to place Pant at No.3 was influenced by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exclusion from the playing XI, as India chose Rohit and Virat Kohli as openers.

Rohit emphasized that India needed a player with strong counter-attacking abilities at the top of the order.

“Watched (Rishabh) Pant play the first few matches in the IPL and made up my mind. It was about having the right batting position. His counter-attacking skill will be helpful, given we cannot play Yashasvi. He has got an all-round game. Besides the openers, none of the other batting positions is fixed, unless it is a Super Over. We want to be flexible,” Indian team captain Rohit Sharma added.

Note that, Rishabh Pant made his return to international cricket for India since his serious car accident in December 2022 against Ireland in the team’s opening match of the tournament. He missed IPL 2023 but came back to captain the team in the 2024 season, impressing selectors with his performance. Pant accumulated 446 runs, including three half-centuries in the tournament, unfortunately his team Delhi Capitals couldn’t qualify for IPL 2024 Playoffs.
