Babar Azam Wants His Batsmen to Be More Proactive

“We want to play positively irrespective of the situation.

Babar Azam

The Pakistan team came under a lot of criticism when Australia played them earlier this year. The batsmen were unable to step on their pedals as they lacked the urgency to force a result. This is what Babar was pointing towards speaking ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. His fellow batsmen received lot of backlash for not being able to take home the advantage despite making big scores.

The middle-order batsman admitted that it is not easy to stamp your authority when the other team is dominating proceedings. However, his men are trying their best to approach Test cricket more positively. While they want to remain optimistic in every match situation, Babar does not want to think too far ahead. Babar said that the strategy over how to win a Test match has to be decided upon on that particular day itself. He stressed upon the importance of adapting to the conditions present. He understands that it is necessary to respect the opposition when they are on top. At the same time, Babar agreed that there is room for improvement in the Pakistan team and the key is to balance all the facets of their game accordingly.

The 27-year-old is confident in the ability of his batsmen to counter spin in subcontinental conditions. He is well aware of the opposition spinners’ domination in their Test series against Australia. However, Pakistan are well-prepared for the challenge, said Babar. He also displayed faith in his own spinners: Yasir Shah, Nauman Ali and Mohammed Nawaz. He feels they have what it takes to pick wickets regularly on tracks assisting their style of bowling.

Babar also did not shy away from backing his fast bowlers to do the job on spin-friendly pitches. Despite the tracks being unresponsive to pace, Pakistan bowlers are quick enough to cause problems for the Sri Lankan batsmen. Led by ever-impressive Shaheen Afridi, the pace bowling attack has a young look to it but remains one to be watched out for in the future. Their captain echoed the same thought while accepting the threat that Sri Lanka possessed in home conditions.
