The Proteas previously had two tournaments, one of which, the T20 Global League, was never even launched due to the board’s prior losses. The Mzansi Super League, on the other hand, was unable to attract many foreign players and was discontinued after two seasons owing to a broadcasting issue and pandemic.

ICC has allowed a window of January and February for this league. The tournament will feature six teams. CSA and SuperSport are collaborating to make this a success. All of the local South African players hope to participate in the competition. This will provide a larger platform for the youngsters to gain experience playing among international cricketers.

With IPL franchises buying all the six teams contesting in this league, it will attract a huge number of Indian followers of cricket. Graeme Smith will look after all the happenings of the tournament on the behalf of the board. The auction for the teams happened on Wednesday, and he should ensure that it concludes in favour of South African cricket.

What is the relationship between the IPL and this league?

Organizations from all over the world were allowed to bid, but It was Indian franchisees who bought all the teams. Earlier, KKR were the only IPL franchise that has bought teams in the Caribbean Premier League and a few other leagues. The owners of Chennai, Mumbai, Rajasthan, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Lucknow have now joined forces with the South African league to add one more team to their global expansion.

Chennai Super Kings Ltd bids the highest price for team Johannesburg. While Mumbai Indians, five-time champions, with its parent company Reliance Industries, purchased Cape Town. Sun TV Group, the owners of Sunrisers, placed their bid on the Gqeberha (port Elizabeth) team.

The RPSG group, owner of Lucknow Super Giants, has bought the Durban team. Rajasthan Royals purchased the team Paarl. Jindal South West Sports, led by Parth Jindal, co-owner of the IPL’s Delhi Capitals, has acquired the Pretoria.

A few Proteas players already play for these franchises; the question is whether they will be given the opportunity to represent their IPL franchises. Like Du Plessis for his former team Chennai and Nortje for the Delhi-owned team. Dewald Brevis for the Blues again, and Rassie and Klaasen for Rajasthan? There are more on the list, as Africans play an important role in the IPL. The CSA has yet to issue a formal announcement. But these are the final franchises that will compete in the league.
