All-rounder Wiaan Mulder and frontline spinner Keshav Maharaj have been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies at home, starting March 16 at Buffalo Park in East London. Wayne Parnell and Tabraiz Shamsi have been called into the squad as replacement players.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday, March 13, confirmed that injuries will keep Mulder and Maharaj on the sidelines. The board also announced that Parnell and Shamsi had been added to the ODI squad ahead of the ODI series against the West Indies.

Mulder experienced slight discomfort during the recently concluded second test against the West Indies at the Wanderers Stadium and subsequent scans revealed a grade one side strain. The Lions all-rounder also suffered a finger injury while batting at the Bullring and did not initially take the field at the start of the Windies’ second innings.

Maharaj ruptured his Achilles while celebrating the wicket of Kyle Mayers on the final day of the second Test against the Windies at the Wanderers. The left-arm spinner has also been ruled out of a pre-planned stint with English County Championship side Middlesex as he is set to spend a minimum of six months away from the game.

“All-rounder Wayne Parnell has replaced Wiaan Mulder ahead of the Betway ODI series against the West Indies. Mulder has suffered a grade-one side strain. Tabraiz Shamsi has also been added, replacing the injured Keshav Maharaj,” said a CSA in an official release.

Parnell and Shamsi were initially not picked in the ODI squad. They have been added to the squad on the back of their strong performances in the franchise T20 competitions. 

The series will kickstart with the first ODI which is scheduled to be played on Thursday, 16 March at Buffalo Park in East London, followed by the second ODI on Saturday, 18 March, also at the same venue. The third and final ODI will take place on Tuesday, 21 March, at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom
