T20 Leagues: “Everyone Wants To Be Sold”: Aakash Chopra

“Pakistani players are banned in the IPL, but they play in all the other T20 leagues. So since Indian franchise owners have bought teams in other leagues, they will also be hiring Pakistan players. So, Pakistani players will soon play for Indian employers again. The UAE is the first league in the world that can challenge the IPL. Players are commodities. But the reality now is that everyone wants to be sold. There are 365 days in a year, but cricket, equivalent to 700 days, is already being played.”

It would be intriguing to see if the PCB provides its players NOCs to compete in these leagues. The International Competition T20 (ILT20) is based in the UAE for select players. The second-most lucrative T20 league will be after the Indian Premier League (IPL). Paying top players a staggering USD 450,000 every season. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) has sanctioned the league but does not own it. It is leading a team that includes its vice-chairman Khalid al Zarooni and general secretary Mubashir Usmani.

T20 League: CSA T20 League

The league debuts in January 2023 with a projected USD 2.5 million salary cap per team. The players of South Africa’s league will be composed of seven local players and a maximum of four foreign players, similar to the IPL concept. Unlike South Africa’s national and local teams, the league will not have franchise transformation targets.

Franchises will be allowed to choose directly from a list of players signed by CSA. In addition to assembling squads by bidding on players at an auction. It is assumed that some of these players, if not all, have received minimum guarantees of $300,000. It is unknown if that will be a player’s highest salary cap.
