In a nail-biting clash at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan clinched a historic 8-run win over Bangladesh, securing their first-ever spot in a World Cup semifinal. Choosing to bat first, Afghanistan posted a modest target of 116 runs, ending their innings at 115/5 in 20 overs.

Bangladesh faced a challenging chase and stumbled early, losing key wickets at critical moments. Despite Litton Das’s resilient unbeaten 54 off 49 balls, he found little support from his teammates as they struggled against Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling.

Rashid Khan was the standout performer for Afghanistan, taking 4 wickets for just 23 runs in his 4 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq also played a crucial role, capturing 4 wickets for 26 runs, effectively dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup and securing the victory for Afghanistan.

This is one of the most historic moment for the Afghanistan team as this will be their first time playing a World Cup semi-final in any format of the game. The Afghans have seen a massive jump in their performance level over the last couple of years, from once being an associate nation to now making it to their first ever World Cup last four.

It was a challenging pitch at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent where batting was really tough. Afghanistan posted 115 on the board only with crucial contributions from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai and Ibrahim Zadran.

With the ball, Rashid Khan broke Bangladesh’s middle-order while Naveen Ul Haq got rid of the top order and the tail. Bangladesh were required 12 off last 12 balls with 2 wickets remaining when Naveen-ul-Haq bowled the most crucial over, the make or break over. But, Naveen-ul-Haq stepped-up to the moment with all the experience on the back of him as he picked 2 wickets in 2 balls to clean out Bangladesh and won the match for his country by 8 runs by DLS method as the target was revised to 114 from 19 overs.
