“Today, I’ve announced my decision to stand down as the captain of the Australian men’s test team. It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but the right one for me, my family, and cricket,” Paine said in a statement as quoted by cricket.com.au.
“As background on my decision, nearly four years ago, I was involved in a text exchange with a then-colleague. At the time, the exchange was the subject of a thorough CA Integrity Unit investigation, throughout which I fully participated in and openly participated in” Tim added.
Cricket Tasmania has also made a statement following Tim’s announcement.
“As soon as Cricket Tasmania was made aware, it undertook an investigation that determined the interaction was consensual, private, occurred on the one occasion only, was between mature adults and was not repeated,” Cricket Tasmania chairman Andrew Gaggin said.
“Cricket Tasmania clearly does not condone this type of behavior and addressed the matter directly with Tim Paine. However, because of the consensual nature of the actions, it was determined that no further action was required or appropriate.” Gaggin added.
Four years back, a CA Integrity Unit investigation & a Cricket Tasmania HR investigation found out that there was no breach of the Cricket Australia Code of Conduct. Paine accepted that he regretted the incident at that time & he still does.
Tim also said that he has spoken to his family and apologized for the same. This decision of his came into action as the conversation will be made public very soon. Hence it is a right choice to respectfully resign from the post of captain of one of the greatest teams in the world of cricket.
Cricket Australia has accepted Paine’s resignation & released a statement for the media.
“Tim felt it was in the best interests of his family and Australian cricket to take this decision to step down as captain,” CA chair Richard Freudenstein said. “The Board has accepted Tim’s resignation and will now work through a process with the National Selection Panel of identifying and appointing a new captain.”
“Tim will continue to be available for selection in the Test team through the Ashes summer,” added Freudenstein.
It should be noted that Tim Paine’s appointment as a test captain happened after a ball-tampering scandal that involved ex-skipper Steve Smith, then vice-captain David Warner and batter Cameron Bancroft.
