It was not long back that Jasprit Bumrah admitted that he is ready to lead the Men in Blue. Bumrah reckoned that he is not chasing the leadership role but will not shy away from taking the opportunity in the future. After Bumrah’s statements, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan backed the seamer for the captain’s duties.
Speaking about the idea of Jasprit Bumrah donning the skipper hat, Irfan said that it will be exciting to see a bowler leading the team. Notably, India has seen only two bowlers captaining the side namely Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble.
“We have not seen too many Indian bowlers doing the captaincy. You can talk about Kapil Dev, he was an all-rounder and after that, Anil Kumble had become a captain as a bowler. So, it will be a unique thing if Jasprit Bumrah becomes the Indian captain in the future,”
Irfan Pathan said during an interaction with Star Sports.

One of the main concerns for Jasprit Bumrah is him not playing many games on Indian soil. The seamer is often rested during the home games as a part of the workload management. He recently missed the West India tour of India and is likely to miss one of the two-Test matches against Sri Lanka.
When questioned about the same, Irfan added that it won’t be a big issue if proper workload management is done. He further added that being a senior player, Bumrah will always be a part of the leadership group irrespective of him being the captain or not.
“There is workload management done. We have seen that he [Bumrah] does not play too much Test match cricket in India. But he has the ability, when you become a senior player, you get the experience. He will definitely be part of the leadership even if he doesn’t get to captain,”
Irfan added.
Jasprit Bumrah’s journey has been outstanding: Irfan Pathan
Further in the interaction, Irfan Pathan heaped praises on the seamer for his meteoric rise in the Indian cricket team. In a short period of time, Jasprit Bumrah has established himself as the backbone of India’s bowling unit.
The Ahmedabad-born has 113 Test wickets to his name in just 27 matches. He has also picked 113 ODI and 67 T20I wickets in 70 and 57 games respectively. Reflecting on Bumrah’s journey, Pathan added he is the number bowler for India as he performs well in all formats. The veteran also feels that the pacer’s journey motivates other players as well.
“Jasprit Bumrah’s journey has been outstanding. He got rewarded when he got a chance in the IPL and then he started representing the Indian team, he has not looked back. He has become India’s No.1 bowler because he plays in all the formats and bowls at difficult stages. The evolution that has been seen, there is no doubt he has the quality. He is a calming influence on the other bowlers when he is present on the field,”
Irfan Pathan concluded.
