NZ VS SA: Kyle Jamieson of New Zealand comments, “We are not focused on Test rankings”. The Blackcaps crushed the Proteas in their first meeting in Christchurch last week. Another win over the Proteas would see New Zealand take over the top spot in the Test rankings from Australia.

New Zealand’s first series win against South Africa will come if there would be a draw next match. Jamieson underlined that the team will be focused solely on that task at hand.

“I think for the group, it’s about each Test as it comes.” Jamieson said.

“There’s other things that just come through the work of each session and each day.”

He added

“While it’s cool to get those milestones and stuff, it’s not the focal point. It’s about us trying to back up that last game. And if we do that, hopefully we’ll come away with a win.”

Said Kyle Jamieson

The Blackcaps beat the tourists by an innings and 276 runs in their previous meeting. It was South Africa’s heaviest defeat since losing by an innings and 300 runs to Australia in Johannesburg during 2002.

And it is only New Zealand’s fifth victory over the Proteas in 46 tests. Jamieson does not expect circumstances to differ significantly from the first test, which will also be held at Hagley Oval.

NZ VS SA: New Zealand Eye Historic Series Win Against South Africa

New Zealand is on the verge of securing the series and reclaiming the world’s number one spot in the second Test against South Africa on Friday. A draw in Christchurch would give New Zealand its first series win against South Africa in 17 tries.

While a win would not only complete a 2-0 series whitewash but also knock Australia off the top of the world rankings. With eight wins from ten Tests, the legendary bowl-first green surface at Hagley Oval has been a happy hunting ground for New Zealand.

Kyle Jamieson, who has 24 wickets in four Tests at the venue, believes that winning the toss isn’t always a benefit.

“When we’ve batted first we’ve been able to see through tough periods and come outside the other side, so while it’s a bit important I don’t think it necessarily determines the outcome.”

He said

In the first Test, New Zealand won the toss and bowled South Africa out for 95 and 111 runs, accumulating 482 runs in their one-time at-bat. While they downplayed the importance of the toss, Henry Nicholls, who hit 105 in New Zealand’s massive innings-and-276-run triumph, stressed the value of familiarity with the place.

“From a batting point of view, we know it’s tough but when you have that experience that’s the perk of having home advantage.”
