The West Indies, co-hosts of the T20 World Cup 2024, delivered a flawless performance to sweep South Africa in the three-match T20I series with a commanding win in Jamaica. The West Indies showcased exceptional fielding and solid all-around cricket to dominate the series finale.

In a memorable moment from the final over of South Africa’s innings, young bowler Shamar Joseph bowled a delivery that led to a spectacular catch. Gerald Coetzee attempted to clear the infield on the offside but failed to get the necessary elevation or distance.

Skipper Brandon King and Obed McCoy both went for the catch, diving simultaneously. However, McCoy, seeing his captain, pulled back at the last moment, allowing King to complete the catch. Coetzee departed for a golden duck, becoming Joseph’s second victim. Joseph concluded his spell with figures of 2-26 from four overs.

McCoy also shone with the ball, taking three crucial wickets for 39 runs. He began by dismissing opener Ryan Rickelton and later took the wickets of Wiaan Mulder and South African captain Rassie van der Dussen during the slog overs. Their efforts restricted South Africa to 163/7.

In response, West Indies’ openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles launched a blistering attack on the new-ball bowlers. Charles smashed 69 runs off just 26 balls, while King contributed a rapid 48 from 28 balls. Kyle Mayers later added a quick 36 off 23 balls, guiding the West Indies to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory with 6.1 overs to spare.

Post-match, King expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and highlighted the importance of the series win heading into the T20 World Cup. “I have been playing well, couldn’t finish the game today but I’m pleased with my performance. We played well as a unit, we have been playing with the same guys for the last 1-2 years. It’s really important, some good momentum going into the World Cup,” King said.

He also praised the team’s consistency and resilience despite missing several key players. “Our bowling performance was very pleasing, we were very consistent, our batters also performed well, different contributions throughout the series. A lot of our main players were missing, but still performing the way we did was great,” he added.
