The ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 has been a challenging journey for the Pakistan cricket team. After losing their initial matches against the USA and India, their chances of advancing to the Super Eight stage appeared slim and was finally diminished after USA and Ireland match ended in a wash out.

Amidst this tough period, Pakistan’s pace spearhead, Shaheen Afridi, has made an emotional plea to fans, urging them to support the team during these difficult times. Afridi expressed disappointment over the lack of backing from some fans, comparing those who don’t support the team in hard times to media critics.

“Everyone supports you in good times, but I’ve always said that fans must support us in tough times. We are not a gully cricket team. This is your Pakistan team as well. If you can’t support us during these times, you’re just like the media,” Afridi said in an interview on the YouTube channel Crickwick.

Placed in a challenging Group A alongside the USA, India, Canada, and Ireland, Pakistan finds themselves in a precarious position. Despite securing a crucial win against Canada, their net run rate of +0.191 leaves them in third place with only two points.

With the USA and India already through to the next round, Pakistan’s final group match against Ireland on Sunday has become a matter of pride. Afridi, who has taken just two wickets in three games at an economy rate of 6.91, has faced scrutiny over his form. However, the 24-year-old defended his recent performances.

“I’ve always been a bowler who bowled 136-140 kph at the start, and I’m still doing so. When a bowler picks up wickets, everyone speaks well, but when he doesn’t, all the negative things are said,” Afridi concluded.
