WI vs IND: India won the first T20I match against West Indies without much difficulty. The hosts struggled with both the bat and the bowl. As a result, the visitors registered a 68-run to take a 1-0 lead in the T20 series. Both teams will now move to Warner Park, Basseterre, St. Kitts for the second T20 match. Despite winning the first game comprehensively, there was one thing that caught the attention of everyone. It was the decision of the management to pick Shreyas Iyer ahead of in-form all-rounder Deepak Hooda in the line-up. It didn’t go well with many former cricketers and fans. As a result, the management faces a lot of criticism from many on the team selection. On the other hand, Iyer, who came to bat at No. 3, registered a 4-ball duck. Hooda, who recently became only the fifth Indian batsman to score a T20 century, was forced to sit out.

WI vs Ind: “That’s Why He Was Drafted Into the Playing XI”- Former Indian Selector Explains Why Iyer Was Picked Ahead of Hooda

Former Indian wicket-keeper and selector, Saba Karim, reckons that Iyer comes before Hooda in the team’s plan. In a discussion with India News, Saba said that the management are looking to give more chances to Iyer despite registering a four-ball duck. The Mumbai-born batter scored two half-centuries in three ODIs earlier on the tour. Hooda, on the other hand, has done well with the few opportunities he has had. The former selector said,

“It is a difficult choice. In the home series against South Africa, Shreyas Iyer batted at No.3–4. I feel Shreyas Iyer is ahead of Deepak Hooda in the pecking order. That’s why he was drafted into the playing XI as soon as he returned to the T20 squad. That being the case, he will have to be given a few more chances in the upcoming games.”

On the other hand, former Indian cricketer, Reetinder Singh Sodhi, who was also on the discussion panel, said that it is a bit harsh that the management is not giving them a chance to Hooda. He also said that it is difficult to call to fit him into the XI. Sodhi added that Iyer needs more chances as he is in the scheme of things for the T20 World Cup. He stated, “Hooda is waiting in the wings. He has shown in the few games that he has played that he could also be a strong contender for the T20 World Cup.” Stay tuned for our 100% FREE cricket tips and match guides from our professional betting tipsters.
