India’s opener and U-19 T20 World Cup-winning captain Shafali Verma was criticized after she couldn’t do well for the senior team in the World Cup. Nonetheless, the young batter was quick to regain her lost touch. Shafali Verma is part of the Delhi Capitals team for WPL and she is guided by Australia’s most successful captain Meg Lanning. The duo has been one of the most successful opening pairs in the competition.

In the game held last night between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants, Marizanne Kapp destroyed the opposition’s batting line-up. The bowler picked up 5 wickets for 15 runs in her 4 over and Gujarat Giants finished at 105 runs. The target was undoubtedly achievable but it was the performance by Shafali Verma that impressed everyone around. Shafali Verma was determined to finish the game and it was reflected by the way she was playing. Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma had a match-winning opening stand of 109 runs and finished the match in 7.1 overs.

It was some of the best hitting I’ve seen says Meg Lanning on Shafali Verma

Shafali Verma went all aggressive on the bowlers and remained not out on 78 runs from 28 balls. Her innings consisted of 10 fours and 5 sixes at a strike of 271.43. Meanwhile, Meg Lanning just scored 21 runs. After the victory, the captain couldn’t stop praising the young Indian opener. “It was some of the best hitting I’ve seen. I said just keep it simple. Stay still and hit the ball straight. I’m still to get over it. That was a pretty cool show to watch from the other end. I was just cheerleading from the other end. It seemed like a new ball wicket. We just had to make sure what we had to do. Shafali didn’t make it look very difficult. Those sort of chases can be tricky if you go into a shell,” Lanning said.
