WPL: Smriti Mandhana Thankful to Loyal RCB Fans
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Smriti Mandhana heaped praise on the loyal fan base of the RCB, saying that despite not winning many games in the ongoing season of the Women’s Premier League, their fans have always turned up in good numbers to support the team after RCB won their first game of the season by defeating UP Warriorz by five wickets at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday.

The Bangalore-based franchise broke their wretched streak and sealed a first-ever win in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after they overcame Uttar Pradesh Warriorz. This ends their losing streak of five games. Prior to their sixth game in the tournament, they lost five back-to-back games and were rooted at the foot of the table with an inferior Net Run Rate as well.

Inform all-rounder Ellyse Perry bowled a brilliant spell of three for 16 in four overs to shoot out the Warriorz to a below-par total of 135 inside 20 overs. Chasing a paltry total of 136, Kanika Ahuja (46) and Richa Ghosh (31*) stepped up for their team and took the team over the finish line with five wickets and two overs to spare. Reflecting on the win, Mandhana said:
WPL: Mandhana Reflects on the First Win
“Yeah, it was tense. We lost a couple of wickets in the 7th over, it was a bit nervous. But the way Kanika and Richa played was brilliant. Kanika in particular, is really proud of her. Really excited to see her bat, the approach she has. She is a 360 degree player, who isn’t the most common in Indian cricket. Really impressed with her and the belief she has. Even when we have not been in great positions, the crowd keep chanting for us. Really happy for this loyal support base, not a lot of teams will have supporters turn up in such high numbers after losing five games.”
Despite having a star-studded squad, RCB has failed miserably in converting their prowess on paper into winning performances on the field in the first half of the WPL 2023. As a result, they find themselves at the bottom of the table with only one win in six games. The Smriti Mandhana-led RCB squad which features the likes of Ellyse Perry, Sophie Devine, Megan Schutt, Heather Knight, Richa Ghosh and Renuka Singh, has failed to live up to the expectations of their fans so far in this season.
