India International Mayank Agarwal Joins Durham for County Championship Run-In

Durham have secured the services of former India Test opener Mayank Agarwal for their crucial final four County Championship matches. The 35-year-old arrives at Chester-le-Street as Division Two leaders Durham push for promotion to the top flight.

The Karnataka batter replaces South Africa’s David Bedingham, who returns home after a stellar season that included five centuries. Agarwal’s signing comes at a perfect time for Durham, who hold a commanding 40-point lead at the summit with just four games remaining.

Proven Pedigree at the Highest Level

Agarwal brings impressive credentials to the northeast. The right-hander scored 1,488 runs at 41.33 in 21 Tests for India between 2018 and 2021. His Test career highlights include four centuries and a magnificent 243 against Bangladesh at Indore in 2019.

More recently, he showcased his red-ball prowess in the Ranji Trophy, amassing 678 runs at 42.37 this season. His standout performance came in the final, where he struck 160 for Karnataka against eventual champions Jammu and Kashmir.

The stylish opener also tasted IPL glory in 2025, playing a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden title triumph over Punjab Kings. This blend of international experience and recent form makes him an ideal replacement for the departing Bedingham.

Durham Eye Return to Division One

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell expressed his delight at the signing. “With David Bedingham returning to South Africa ahead of their international red-ball summer, it was important we acted by recruiting a high-class international cricketer,” Campbell said.

The timing couldn’t be better for Durham’s promotion ambitions. They could seal their return to Division One as early as this week with victory over third-placed Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. With seven wins and three draws from ten matches, Durham have been the standout team in Division Two this season.

Agarwal isn’t new to County cricket, having spent three matches with Yorkshire at the end of the 2025 season. That experience should help him adapt quickly to English conditions as Durham chase their first Division One appearance since their relegation.

The addition of Agarwal strengthens an already formidable Durham batting lineup. His arrival coincides with the team’s impressive recent form, including a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Gloucestershire where they needed just six balls to seal the win.
